Lost data can be described as in ability to connect the data with its originator or owner, very often the term lost data is apt, as this is usually what has occurred, the hard drive or media has no idea where the data actually resides, it could be LBA0 or LBA23866, in other words any where within the geometry of the media, the location of the data is performed via the operating system.

If for a number of reasons the operating system become corrupt, the location of the lost data may difficult, at least under normal operating conditions, the file system, FAT, FAT 32, NTFS for instance may lose the table of contents so to speak, this would cause your data to be temporary lost.

The procedure for recovering lost data usually requires an engineer sorting through the media via a hexedit utility or similar, then rebuilding this native structure to recover the lost data, this procedure can be time consuming, and is based on many factors, such as contiguation, file size, file type, chronologically and crucially whether the client has attempted the repair, which uncertain situations can be devastating.
